Military gains in South Waziristan
Noor-ul-Ain
Reaffirming their resolve to the national soil, the Pakistan army has once again indulged itself to save the homeland from the aggressive designs of the terrorists. In the purview of the interior chaos caused by the suicidal attacks and social discomfort, the Pakistan army has mustered itself and has ended up with the old myth of creating a status quo in the tribal belt. A bird’s eye view of our history shows us the undaunted efforts of our military on various occasions. Yet another event has called on to the mantels of our soldiers and they have indulged in combating terrorism from Swat, Malakand and now South Waziristan. The events began to take shape when the alleged militants crossed borders and inhabited in the areas of Swat. Negotiations took place and then a series of military operations victoriously gained back the Swat territory. Resultantly the militants rushed towards Waziristan to take refuge in its safe havens and then scattered in various cities to create mayhem. The parliament passed a resolution and operation Rah-e-Nijat was declared next on track. A series of events took place where on one side Pak army shattered many Taliban facilities and an American drone attack killed Mehsud and his family in Waziristan. On Oct 2, 2009, an unrestrained operation was in progress against the Taliban by blocking them from two sides in Waziristan. In this operation Pak army is not only fighting against the local militants but their Arab and Uzbek counterparts as well. There is one general view that the Waziristan operation is likely to finish off in December. This is because much of the areas in Waziristan have been cleared of the terrorists and the security forces are consolidating their positions in the secured territories of Sararogha and Shakkai, etc. Operation is still on in Laddah and a lot of arms and ammunition has been seized from these areas. In Tiarza ammunition was seized from a long tunnel. Areas like Lundi, Razmak Makin and Daukadoa are still under operation. The army is providing free medical treatment to the people who did not leave the areas at war. General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani on his behalf printed numerous pamphlets that were distributed among the Waziristan population so that they should have an increased faith in the Pakistan army and the security forces. On the 18th of November the Taliban expressed their determination to defeat the Pak army by using the guerilla techniques. Pak army has taken a lot of militants as fugitives from various areas. The Taliban yet deny all the claims made by the Pakistan army of being victorious. Taliban have their supporters from madressahs in different cities that are coming to them through various routes to support them. They have also taken the responsibility of the blasts in Lahore and Peshawar. The militants admit that now they are facing a multipronged attack due to which some Taliban factions who are anti Mehsud have surrendered and have pledged complete support to fight on behalf of the security forces. Armed forces are achieving their chief goals in this war as the Pakistani leadership and the civil society is in complete support of this military operation. A lot of foreign ammunition, drugs and currency has been recovered from Waziristan which shows that the battle is in the favour of the security forces. What does the foreign ammunition and currency signal at that has been seized from Waziristan? Could be many… there could be a foreign hand involved in the matter to destabilise Pakistan with its own men to achieve the multiple interests in the region. Pakistan is regarded as a corridor to natural resources and a resource rich region has always been a source of attraction for the industrial states as the natural resources are depleting. But all these selfish objectives of the aliens cannot be achieved when the guardians of the soil leave no stone unturned to defend the country. Now when much of the work has been completed what could be more that the Pakistan army wants to accomplish from the area? The first and foremost thing that the army should aspire at is to take a little rest and let the situation cool down for some time as the major hot shots have been eliminated. The tenure for this détente should be until the Taliban nominate another leader for them. In such a case the army and the government should plan a strategy for dialogue with the Taliban. The authorities should also devise the ways gratifying the basic rights as well as needs of the Taliban so that they can leave the negative means and adopt a compensatory behavior to solve their problems without targeting their own people and their own country. Furthermore Pak army has arrested two prime aides to Baitullah i.e. Qari Saifullah and Maulvi Omer. This shows that the Pak army will not allow any sort of infiltration on the holy soil of their country. The other solution could be that the army should plan a complete sweeping up strategy of the militants. But this would create chaos and reprisal from the tribal people. The civil society should come up with new developmental and encouraging programmes for the people who are in a dire need of support and assistance. The civil society should think how much the army and the population is at pains. Serious unrelenting efforts are needed. The government should also focus on the military as well as economic aid by the superpowers to constantly work on the terrorist cause because an unstable and a government which is between the devil and the deep sea cannot afford the cost of such a war alone. Aid is also required because the number of IDPs is increasing day by day and catering to their needs is a challenge for Pakistan. This operation has been criticized but this was one of the options available for Pakistan to save the country. Cleansing of terrorists should take place not only in this region but other suspected regions as well and that should be by the armed forces of the country by themselves without any foreign intervention because if it happens it would be considered as a foreign monopoly to destabilize Pakistan. qanetanoor@yahoo.com
