Lawyers divided on lockout issue F.P. Report
MULTAN: Lawyers of Southern Punjab have divided into two factions, one of them showed their reservations on the issue of locking the courtrooms until the restoration of the sacked judges and said the lawyers should not take the law in their hands. Senior and apolitical lawyers on Wednesday said that they were against the All Pakistan High Court Bar Associations’ proposal to lock the courtrooms until the restoration of the sacked judges. The proposal is likely to be put before the All Pakistan Lawyers Convention (APLC) on July 19 for its approval.A majority of lawyers, however, showed their reservations and said the lawyers should not take the law in their hands. Demanding the APLC not to approve the proposal, they said it would bring a bad name to the lawyers’ movement. They said, "Lawyers who have no affiliation with any political party did not even observe a weekly strike. How can they follow this decision?"Former President of High Court Bar Multan Habib-ullah Shakir while terming the step unacceptable, said it would bring lawlessness to the bars. He said, "Musharraf removed the judges illegally, but we need not take any illegal step for their restoration. If the proposal is approved then the lawyers’ movement will lose its credibility among people." Political lawyers Rana Javed Iqbal, Sahibzada Farooq Ali Khan said a few political lawyers had decided to lock the courtrooms. They alleged that the Jamaat-e-Islami & APDM parties had hijacked the lawyers’ movement and instigated lawyers to lock the courtrooms. "If the proposal is approved, the lawyers’ movement will end in a fiasco." Pakistan Bar Council Ex-vice chairman Mirza AZiz Akbar Baig said the lawyers had the right to protest in a rightful manner. He said the step would spoil the lawyers’ movement. Punjab Bar Council member Khurram Latif Khosa said a majority of lawyers had rejected the strike calls. He said differences had already surfaced between the lawyers and the decision would widen this rift.
