Rashid escapes life bid, 4 die
Yasir Ali khan RAWALPINDI: Chief of Awami Muslim League Sheikh Rashid sustained bullet injuries and four of his party workers were killed in an armed attack on his election office here on Monday. Former minister Sheikh Rashid who is contesting the by-polls at NA-55 scheduled to be held later this month escaped an apparent attempt on his life when some unidentified men started firing on his car near his office at 6:10pm. Four security guards of Shiekh Rashid were killed including Anwar ul Haq and Shahid while two others sustained bullets in the firing incident. Javed Qureshi the personal assistant of Sheikh Rashid told media that AML Chief was hit on one of his feet and have been shifted to hospital for treatment. He said Sheikh Rashid was coming out of his office when he was attacked by unknown assailants carrying Kalashnikov(s), adding the attack killed at least four guards of AML Chief. There were about 15 people present in the office when unidentified men attacked the election office of Sheikh Rasheed Ahmed, leader of Awami League in the area of Khayaban Sir Syed in the jurisdictions of Pir Wadhai police station, he added. The spokesman Lal Haveli also confirmed that Sheikh Rashid was present in the office at the time of firing. The bullet has hit Sheikh Rashid Ahmed in his foot and he has been admitted to the hospital and is in the operation theatre, he added. Heavy contingent of police and other law enforcing agencies rushed to the crime site and cordoned off the area and started investigation. A large number of activist and workers of Awami Muslim League were protesting against the incident outside AML office near Lal Havaily. APP adds: Chief Police Officer, Rao Muhammad Iqbal said that two persons identified as Anwar ul Haq and Shahid were killed while two others including Sheikh Rashid injured in the firing. Rao Iqbal said the Medical Superintendent of District Headquarters Hospital had confirmed him that Sheikh Rashid got a fracture in his foot but did not receive any bullet injury. The CPO said that one dead body had been shifted to the DHQ hospital while the other was moved to the Holy Family Hospital. Responding to a question, he said Sheikh Rashid had not informed police about his movements. " We had requested him (Sheikh Rashid) to inform police about his movements especially his corner meetings and other engagements during the by-election for security purposes, but he did not respond to our letter," he added. He said a judicial inquiry had been ordered into the incident.
