Girl killed as rebels fire rockets in Landikotal
Takbir Khan Afridi LANDIKOTAL: Militants launched a rocket attack from the mountains on the cantonment and at surrounding villages in Khugakhel area of Landikotal Tehsil here on Monday that was retaliated by the security forces with heavy artillery fire. A rocket fell on the home, near the government high school, of one Wayis Shinwari killing a ten-year old girl Sumera, daughter of Tikka Khan Shinwari who was passing by the house to fetch water. The wife of Wayis Khan Shinwari, and two children of one Akber Khan; 12-year-old Naseem and three-year-old Shireen, were injured. The Injured were taken to the Headquarters Hospital of the agency. The wife of Wayis Khan Shinwari was later shifted to a hospital in Peshawar, as she was in serious condition. Official sources said that militants fired four mortar shells from the nearby hilltops in which two landed inside Landikotal army cantonment in an open ground causing no human casualty. Meanwhile, security forces targeted the militants' hideouts with heavy guns in the mountains. Security forces continuously fired on the suspected hideouts for an hour. Most shopkeepers of Landikotal Bazaar immediately closed their stores and the scared customers left in a hurry when the attack started and market gave a deserted look. Many were stranded in their homes during the attack. NATO trailer damaged: A trailer, registration No. P.C. 6119, loaded with two army trucks for onward transportation to NATO forces in Afghanistan was partially damaged by a bomb blast planted inside border check post Torkhum. No death or injury was reported. The trailer was parked on the Pakistan side awaiting clearance of papers when the blast took place.
