Electronic Olympiad attract students
Muqaddam Khan SWABI: All Pakistan Electronic Olympiad competition attracted students of different universities/institutes from all over the country while participating in the three-day event held at Ghulam Ishaq Khan Institute of Engineering Sciences and Technology. Organised by IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers), GIK Institute chapter, the competition was divided into robothon competition, microcontroller interfacing competition, brainwave competition and explore-a-vision competition. In the robothon competition teams competed against each other with robots that completed a predefined track in the shortest possible time while in microcontroller interfacing competition, the capabilities of the participants were tested with interesting challenges regarding microcontroller programme. Similarly in the brainwave competition teams fought against each other to battle with mental sharpness and wisdom and in the explore-a-vision competition a technological problem was given to the participants and they were asked to come up with a complete solution. Addressing the prize distribution ceremony on Monday, Prof Dr Fazal Ahmad Khalid, Pro-Rector (academic) said that the Institute has planned to strengthen the professional societies which would boost the prospects to involve professionals and experts in various activities and competitions, creating an environment where exchange of knowledge and views could help them. "Activity-based learning is critical. It enables the learners to interact with great skill and abilities. Judging others and their own capabilities always help the learners to plan and conduct their research activities," he said. He said that such events enable the students to familiarize themselves with modern technologies, designs, innovation and latest research, he said, adding that the participants could make the comparison of their capabilities with others while taking part in a healthy competition. Dr Nisar Ahmed, advisor of the society said that all these competitions were not organised only for entertainment and prize-giving but to bring the future talent of the country together and to make them see the challenges of science in an entirely new light. The explore-a-vision competition won by the students of the Comsats University of Science and Technology Islamabad, microcontroller interfacing competition was bagged by UET Faisalanad, robothan competition by Fast Islamabad and in brainwave competition UET, Peshawar students were the winners.
