Growing pains of democracy

Posted on 12 months ago

More than four years back Pakistan's transition from "one-man rule" to democracy won worldwide plaudits. Today the PPP- led coalition government-never mind corruption, poverty, joblessness and other ills associated with the ruling elite- can proudly look back at its achievements especially, the landmark constitutional amendments, since assuming the reins of power. Unemployment and crime keeps on rising. HIV and Aids continues to ravage mostly the poor.
Corruption reeks from government corridors, with unashamed public officers lining their pockets with taxpayers' money. This is not what the people fought for - the freedom to loot and plunder.
