9 districts of Sindh under flood threat

KARACHI: A survey of Sindh's nine districts, both in central and lower regions, have made a frightening revelation that there exist over 300 obstructions in natural drainage supposed to drain water to the sea in case of flash floods caused by heavy monsoon this year. The Frontier Post learnt Thursday.
The survey shows that over 30 towns of these districts may face flood situation and thus be inundated if these obstructions were not removed.
The survey made by Army's Core 5 shared with the provincial government reveals that there are 306 obstructions in natural drains in Khairpur, Naushehroferoz, Benazirabad (formerly Nawab Shah), and Matyari, Sanghar, Tando Allahyar, Mirpurkhas, Badin and Thatta districts. Of the total, 81 obstructions have been kept in major category while the rest 225 fall in minor. The analysis of the document shows that there are 38 obstructions in natural passes of Khairpur district, 29 in Naushehroferoz, 36 in Benazirabad, nine in Matyari, 30 in Sanghar, 22 in Tando Allahyar, 34 in Mirpurkhas, 53 in Badin and 40 in Thatta districts.
The annexure of the document unearths that in Khairpur district Kot Diji, Gambat, Ranipur, Hingorja, Thari Mir Wah and other could be at risk as they exist near the obstructions. In Naushehroferoz district, towns like Tharo Shah, Moro, Qazi Ahmed, Sakrand and others will live under a threat.
In Matyari and Hala, Bhit Shah besides few others will be at risk of inundation. In Sanghar district, Shahdadpur, Berani, Tando Adam, Udero Lal and others will be at risk. Similar fear will remain with Tando Allahyar, Nasarpur, Chambar and other in Tando Allahyar district.
Simultaneously, Mir Wah, Digri, Dambalo and other towns of Mirpurkhas, Talhar, Khor Wah, Golarchi, Tando Ghulam Ali, Matli and other towns of Badin district may face similar situation.
