Pakistan-US relations

Posted on 10 months ago

When it comes to Pak-US relations, the authorities as well as the media present the existing situation as grim and show concern about future prospects. Why do we have differences and arguments, is a big question having many answers. To cover up our own inefficiency and lack of depth in our plans to deal with countries who have authority and power, we simply label them as adopting 'Bullying behaviour' and exploiting 'dependence' of other countries.
This may be partially correct but significant difference is in thinking and planning. The politics of US with other countries is based on her own interests and careful planning. They stand firm on their policy guidelines to achieve their objectives which are important to them. US people have no concern regarding the political set-up and the policy that is totally left to the politicians. The politicians have a team of experts on the issues related to foreign affairs who study the situation and give suggestions. National interest is above all.
On our end the scenario is quite different. We have politicians as ministers who have no know how in dealing with foreign relations. They depend on special advisors who are all the time worried about their positions and job. Whatever decisions are to be taken are left to the bureaucracy who utilizes its experience and insight and provides necessary suggestions.
This difference in mindset between Pakistan and US is of major concern. We do not understand what US actually wants from us and how should we present our case to them. This leads to misunderstandings and aggressive posturing from US. We should have a careful study of issues, well prepared arguments and a firm stand presented in an effective way.
We cannot change mindsets immediately but we can clarify perceptions shrouded in the fog of misunderstandings and present our point of view in the perspective to meet the challenges of today and tomorrow.
