Twin Cities receive heavy rains Flights schedule disrupted, two children die in roof collapse, low lying areas flooded

RAWALPINDI: Twin Cities of Islamabad, Rawalpindi and upper parts of the country received moderate rain breaking the long hot and dry spell and bringing much sought after relief to the residents of the area.The twin cities received light showers on Friday evening and a major rain hit the cities on Saturday morning. Azad Kashmir, Gujranwala and Lahore also received rain on Saturday.Due to the heavy monsoon rain spell which started early Saturday morning the water level in Nullah Leh reached to dangerous level, flight schedule was disrupted and two children lost their lives in a roof collapse incident.As the water level touched 12 feet at Katarian of Nullah Leh and 8 feet at Gawalmandi Bridge due to rains the local administration sounded off sirens to warn the citizens of possible flooding while all rescue departments have also been placed on high alert.After which the residents living in low lying area of Arjan Nagar, RA Mohalla, Gawalmandi, Usman Pura, Muslim Colony, Nadeemabad, Chamanzar Colony, Dhok Khabba, Dhok Farman Ali and other areas started to shift to safer places.As a result of inclement weather the flight schedule was also disrupted and many flights were diverted to Lahore. Five international flights scheduled to land at Benazir International Airport Saturday morning were diverted to Lahore and the airport was temporary closed down.Traffic at airport road also remained suspended due to rain water.Meanwhile two minor children, two-year-old Aurangzeb and his seven-year-old sister Naseema were killed due to roof collapse in Gulraiz Colony while their father was severely injured who was rushed to the hospital.Due to flooding in drainage rain water entered the houses of people in Dhok Syeedan.DCO Saqib Zafar says that they are well prepared for any flooding and initial warning has been sounded. Currently more than 4 flood relief centres are active in the city. He said that the flooding in Nullah Leh is under control and if deemed necessary immediate operation would be launched. Meanwhile, Met Office has predicted new spell of monsoon for central and upper parts of the country. According to Met Office, the new spell of monsoon rains will last for three days and rains are predicted for central and upper parts of the country. Rain in Islamabad and Rawalpindi turned the weather pleasant. Met Office has also predicted rain for Lahore, Gujranwala, Sargodha and Peshawar. Meanwhile, severe dust storm lashed lower Sindh including Hyderabad. The speeding winds damaged electricity and communication installations. After heavy rains in upper parts of the country, low floods also predicted in all major rivers, met office said.It is feared that floodwater can enter the low lying areas of Gujranwala, Gujrat, Sialkot, Hafizabad and Mandi Bahauddin.
