Ignorance about Tarbela Dam

Posted on 10 months ago

Tarbela dam was built to supplement Mangla dam which could not have replaced all of the 17 maf lost in the three eastern rivers. Tarbela dam increased canal supplies by 25 per cent which were to be shared by all the provinces. Sindh got its share of 7 maf through increase in the flow of the Indus and was able to cultivate an additional 27 lakh acres.
North Punjab and KP would have got their shares through the left and right bank canals if Kalabagh dam had been built. Until Kalabagh dam is built they will be denied water from any dam on the Indus, be it Tarbela, Bhasha, Akhori, Skardu or Katzara.
South Punjab is getting its share through CJ and TP link canals. This is from Punjab’s share in the water stored at Tarbela dam and not from Sindh’s share. The charge that Punjab is stealing Sindh’s water is totally untenable.
